The host Dalhousie Tigers and Acadia Axewomen are bringing U SPORTS electricity back to the Scotiabank Centre. For the first time ever, Halifax will host both men’s and women’s championships simultaneously— the third time in U SPORTS history. Basketball fans can expect double the energy as both the top eight ranked teams from each men’s and women’s leagues battle it out for the W. P. McGee Trophy and Bronze Baby Trophy, respectively.
Cindy Tye, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Dalhousie University states, “The Final 8 is one of the most prestigious events on the U SPORTS calendar and we are thrilled to bring it to Halifax where it has enjoyed decades of success for student-athletes, coaches and fans. We are proud to be part of the sport tourism economy that is stimulating the city and province, while continuing the record-breaking history of Halifax serving as the host for these championships."
This year marks the 32nd occasion of the Men’s Final 8 filling the seats of the Scotiabank Centre and the first time the women’s championship will take the court of the iconic arena. The Women’s Final 8 last came to Halifax in 1980, hosted at Dalhousie University. This year, Dalhousie University is set to host the men’s championship and Acadia University, the women’s. Both teams will receive automatic qualifications to their respective championships.
Brian Finniss, Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Events at Acadia University says, "Halifax is synonymous with hosting the U SPORTS Final 8 championships. Acadia is honoured to be part of Team Halifax and the momentum it’s stimulated to continually bring these championships back to the region. We look forward to welcoming the country’s best, celebrating the student-athletes, coaches, and staff who will be part of an unforgettable event.”
The last time the Men’s Final 8 came to the capital of Nova Scotia in 2023, over 40,000 spectators flowed through the streets of downtown Halifax to witness the spectacle, breaking the all-time Final 8 attendance record. 16 games will light up the court at the Scotiabank Centre, while six games will bring the stoke to the secondary host venue, the Homburg Centre at Saint Mary’s University. Each game will be played as a double-header session, with the exception of Saturday at the Saint Mary’s Homburg Centre that will be a triple-header.
Nova Scotia’s Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism & Heritage, Dave Ritcey notes, "The 2027 U SPORTS Final 8 will bring the very best of Canadian university basketball to Nova Scotia. By hosting both the men's and women's championships under one roof, we'll create a shared celebration that connects communities and inspires the next generation of athletes. Events like this attract visitors, support local businesses and showcase our passion for sport. We're proud to support the Final 8 and can't wait to welcome everyone to Halifax next March."
Mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality, Andy Fillmore says, “Halifax has a long and proud history with university basketball, and we’re excited to welcome both the Men’s and Women’s Final 8 Championships to our city. This will be an incredible week of sport at the Scotiabank Centre with 16 of the best university teams in Canada. We look forward to welcoming the athletes, coaches, families, and fans to Halifax – and showing them why our city is such a great host for major sporting events.”
